McKayla Maroney is an American gymnast born on December 9, 1995 in Long Beach, California. Maroney was a member of the 2011 World Championship Team that won the team gold medal. Maroney is also the reigning World Champion on vault. At the 2012 National Visa Championships, Maroney suffered a mild concussion and nasal fracture when she landed flat on her back during a training session prior to night two of the competition. Maroney petitioned for the opportunity to compete at the Olympic Trials. On July 1, 2012, Maroney was one of the five women selected to the USA Gymnastics Olympic team. Maroney and her teammates won the team gold medal on July 31, 2012 and Maroney won the silver medal in the vault event finals.
