There are various ways of mounting the uneven bars. This skill is the first in the routine and is usually a very easy skill, rated A or B. Mounts to front support (which are very common) are usually followed by a swing backwards, or cast, to a handstand. Casts are catagorized with free hip circles in the Code of Points.

Nonacrobatic Mounts[]

(Acrobatic and non-actrobatic mounts are not a distinction made in the Code of Points but might make the list clearer here, particularly since acrobatic mounts are very rare.)

  • Glide kip on low bar to front support: A. The gymnast glides forward with hips bent, legs together or straddled, until her body is extended forward, hands on the bottom of the bar, then pulls her hips to the bar and shifts to front support. On the high bar, the gymnast swings forward (long hang kip). The kip is considered a difficult skill to learn but is indisputably necessary for an uneven bars routine. This skill is repeated many times throughout a routine.
  • Jump 1/2 twist, kip to front support or stoop through to rear support: A. A stoop through is when the gymnast bends her hips and holds her legs between her arms, legs not touching the bar.
  • Jump full twist, kip to front support: B
  • Kip on low bar or high bar, stoop through, straddle cut or straddle cut backwards to hang: A
